Barry Collins and Joan Roser live in New South Wales, Australia. He was 70 when he was diagnosed in May, 2007. His initial PSA was 12.20 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6, and he was staged T1c. His initial treatment choice was External Beam Radiation+ADT and his current treatment choice is None. Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2015 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

This is my third experience with cancer. Firstly, diagnosed in 1989 with TCC (Transitional cell carcinoma)in situ in bladder, treated with a full course of BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin), in remission until 1992 when cancer returned and I received a further full course of BCG. Still in remission (now 15 years), still having annual check cystoscopies.

I had a PSA reading of 12.2 ng/ml in April, 2007, also biopsy of Prostate May, 2007. Diagnosis of Gleason Grade 6 Cancer confirmed in late May, 2007.

Commenced Hormone Therapy - ADT (Androgen Deprivation Therapy) - (Zoladex Safesystem Implant) in June, 2007.

PSA in August, 2007 was 0.07.

Due for next HT implant and pre-planning for Radiation Therapy on 11th September, 2007.

Here's hoping it is third time lucky. Am very positive in my expectations and attitude.

Regards, Barry.

UPDATED

January 2009

Following my Hormone Therapy and Radiation Therapy durig the last half of 2007 I have found I have little after effects. My Testosterone is very low and I feel I have been medically castrated, a small price to pay.

My bowel and bladder excretions seem to want to work in unison nowadays, again a small price to pay. I have recently had a Colonscopy and it appears quite clear with no bowel problems.

I also had a check cystoscopy to ensure the bladder cancer I had in 1989 and 1992 was still in remission, again with positive results.

I am convinced I will probably die with Prostate Cancer but not FROM Prostate Cancer.

Regards, Barry.

UPDATED

August 2010

All appears to be going well with my experiences with the word "Cancer". TCC of the Bladder has now been in remission since 1992 although I undergo 6 monthly "check flexible Cystoscopies" to ensure this remains the case.

I have regular 6 monthly Prostate checkups at the Cancer Clinic, Westmead hospital. These show a constant PSA at 0.1 ug/L. Testosterone is gradually rising but still very low.

Regarding erectile problems, memories are sweet. Bleeding still evident on irregular basis as result of Radiation Therapy damage together with small haemorrhoids.

Joan and I lead a very active, enjoyable and loving life and I am very positive that I undertook the correct procedures for MY particular case.

Regards, Barry.

UPDATED

January 2012

Where do I start? It is all good news.

Firstly my bladder cancer of 1989 and 1992 has now been in remission since 1992 and I have undergone regular check cystiscopies and biopsies over the years about 50 cystoscopy/biopsy procedures in all as far as I can recall. My urologist has now told me that after 20 years, and me being 75 years of age, he cannot do anything more for me and as far as he is concerned, after 20 years, I am cured.

The Prostate problem is still under review at the Westmead Hospital Cancer Clinic, but it looks most promising. My PSA has been constant since 2010 at about about <0.1 and my testosterone varies but is always well below performance level (the price we men pay in appreciation of a good woman). I anticipate my next appointment at Westmead Cancer Clinic will put me back to a 5 year review plan. I just have to make sure no other gremlin gets me in the meantime.

Joan and I have now moved into a self care Retirement Village at Basin View, NSW, and are enjoying some of the happiest days of our lives. In other words I have not had any treatment, hormone or radiation since 2007.

To all who read this in the early stages of Prostate Cancer, please remember you are dealing with a word not a sentence.

Best of luck to you all.

Regards. Barry Collins

UPDATED

February 2013

The Good News continues.

As can be seen in my previous updates, my choice of treatment was Hormone Therapy - ADT (Androgen Deprivation Therapy) - (Zoladex Safesystem Implant) in June, 2007, followed by Radiation Therapy at the end of 2007. The success achieved with my treatment, re-inforces that I did choose the correct programme for MY treatment and the results speak for themselves.

At the outset, I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Viet Do who guided me through the alternatives available, allowing me to make a fairly informed decision on my future. Viet conducted regular checkups on my progress during treatment and continues to do so. My checkups with Viet are now annually, with my GP doing the 6 month review. PSA readings remain a steady 0.1 ng/ml although my Testosterone reading is also extemely low and I do not expect any change in this.

Joan and I continue to live an active, enjoyable and loving life and I am most grateful to feel this way and sincerely hope that anyone reading this will experience similar great results.

Best of luck to you all.

Regards, Barry Collins.

May 2014

In my case, Good News continues.

As can be seen in my previous updates, my choice of treatment was Hormone Therapy followed by Radiation Therapy.

I have always been confident that the chosen path would be successful. Dr. Viet Do guided me through the treatment and I am most appreciative of his concern and guidance. Viet conducted regular checkups on my progress following treatment and continued to do so until recently. At my last visit Viet declared that I was no longer in any danger from Prostate Cancer and suggested a testing management plan to my G.P.

My PSA readings have been constant at around 0.1 ng/ml and I will continue testing with my G.P. on a 6 monthly basis. My testosterone levels have been low for 6 years now, but this is not a hinderance, nor a concern, for me.

Joan and I continue to live an enjoyable and loving life, and I am most grateful to feel this way and sincerely hope that anyone reading this will experience similar results.

Best of luck to you all.

Regards, Barry Collins.
