Barry S and Judy live in Ohio, USA. He was 56 when he was diagnosed in February, 2012. His initial PSA was 6.30 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 7b, and he was staged T2b. His initial treatment choice was Surgery (Retropubic Prostatectomy) and his current treatment choice is None. Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2015 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

I had surgery March 23rd, 2012. I had 4 malignant tumors in my prostate--but nothing in my lymph system. So at this writing I am 5 weeks out.

I am completely incontinent and have ED -- Viagra so far does not work, vacuum pump helps, but am frustrated with "wearing my urine" all the time. I have started biotherapy and some other treatments for incontinence. Incontinence is effecting our attempts at a sex life. Just too gross for my wife at this point.

Just beginning to feel good again and have some stamina. Back to work full time 2 weeks ago but still get tired mid day. I assume all this is pretty normal from what I read.

Hope both the incontinence and the ED improve soon--but I assume this will be along haul too.

[It seems that Barry may have been misled by his medical advisors as to the potential side effects of his surgery and how long it might take to recover. Although it is not possible to set out any accurate recovery timetable, the expectation of erectile recovery within five weeks is naive.]

UPDATED

May 2013

I am 14months out from my robotic surgery. It has been a hard year. I had a urethral stricture in July of 2013, had surgery for it and it got infected and ended up with body wide sepsis. VERY ill. Got over that eventually.

The ED has been a challenge. Pills didn't work. I used a vacuum pump and that helped and with that something called prelude in the shower every morning. In recent months my erections have gotten stronger and firmer and have an occasional erection during the night. With stimulation can now have a love life agin. Not the same as before but good. I had almost given up hope.

My incontinence is awful. I wear protective undergarments plus go thru 4-5 women's heavy pads a day. Went back to my urologist and they said due to scar tissue and the stricture I will never regain continence. So I had an artificial urinary sphincter surgically installed two weeks ago tomorrow (April 18). Still recovering from that surgery--no fun--and it will be activated June 2. It's been a tough year but I see light at the end of the tunnel and hope that things will finally get back to normal.

UPDATED

June 2014

I had an artificial sphincter installed in April 2013. Best thing I've done. Down from 5 pads a day to one. It is easy to live with. Erections have returned after 18 months post op. Doing fine there. I feel good and the cancer is gone. There is hope after rp surgery.
