Randall Lee and Terri live in Indiana, USA. He was 54 when he was diagnosed in August, 2004. His initial PSA was 36.00 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 7, and he was staged T1c. His initial treatment choice was External Beam Radiation (ProstRcision) and his current treatment choice is None. Here is his story.

After a routine blood test and my first ever PSA test which was 36.0, (age 54), I took a free PSA test a week later and it was 26.0. I then had a biopsy done which revealed a Gleason of 3+4=7.

I did research online and met with a local urologist and a local radiologist. I sensed a lack of knowledge and experience in these local doctors as I was telling them about options they had never heard about. My research kept mentioning Mayo Clinic, John Hopkins, Dr. Dattoli and RCOG. I was curious as to what RCOG was. Turns out it is the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia.

After reviewing their literature and results ..I applied to them and was accepted for surgery in December, 2004. Subsequently, I met a co-employee who had went there a year earlier. It was very reassuring to hear his experience as well as three of his friends who went there. My PSA was measured at 21.0 just prior to seeds being placed in the prostate in December, 2004. After a month my PSA was down to 6.0 and they began seven weeks of external radiation.

This process is called ProstRscision® by RCOG. The seeds and external radiation are of lower dosage than if just one source of radiation was used. The lower dosages are to prevent side effects and collateral damage.

I had a catheter in for one night in December. I experienced very little side effects which is one reason I chose this method. I have my PSA checked every three months and except for a predictable bounce (a bounce is a result first discovered by the RCOG database) it has consistently went down. Currently, as of June, 2009, I am 0.20 PSA. I will be considered cured if I can maintain it at this low level for several years.

I am not taking any erectile medications and do not have continence issues. I highly recommend that you do research, research, research and do not feel you have to rush out and use your local doctor. Find someone with experience and a track record they are willing to share.
