John Stevenson and Brenda live in Scotland. He was 57 when he was diagnosed in June, 2008. His initial PSA was 11.90 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6, and he was staged T1c. His initial treatment choice was Non-Invasive (Active Surveillance) and his current treatment choice is Undecided. Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2014 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

Hi all!

My Family history.. My Grandmother died with breast cancer, an aunt died with ovarian cancer and I recently lost an uncle to prostate cancer - all on my mother's side of the family. Married to Brenda with five grownup kids and I work in retail, Brenda is a staff nurse in a ITU ward and has nursed PCA patients after surgery and knows and sees the problems that patients have. That and the fact I have a 'pussycat' cancer helped me to decide on Watchful Waiting.

On July 2, 2008 my biopsy result showed two of seven samples on left side as positive, nothing on right side positive; Gleason score was 6 (3+3) and my PSA 11.9. I had my bone scan and my MRI and I met my consultant on August 5, 2008 for the big result and discussion on where to go next. The bone scanwas clear but MRI results still not finished until August 20 when I was told staging is T1C and MRI was all clear. So I opted for Active Surveillance for the next six months.

October 1, 2008 I met with oncologist at the Beatson Centre and was told my prostate was too large for radiotherapy. On my return visit in January 2009, now on Alfuzosin to try reduce the size of my prostate, but I had to stop Alfluzosin as was dropping my heart rate to much - I have a heart condition.

Repeat biopsy in May 2009 shows no change prostate - still 70cc Gleason 6. I decided to stay on AS for now.

October 1, 2009. PSA now 7.3 I don't want to jump the gun but is the Jane Plant diet doing something ?

September 2009 PSA down to 7.1
November 18, 2009 PSA 6.6
March 24, 2010 PSA 9.5
June 30, 2010 PSA 9.4

My Oncologist wants another biopsy done. He thinks that the time to decide on treatment may be approaching, though I don't know why he is thinking this way other than a slight rise in my PSA.

My next biopsy will be this month - September 2010 but I am waiting for new date as I am off on holiday for two weeks at that time, I make every day count. I know that may sound a bit cavalier but life and time with my family are important.

UPDATED

May 2012

My PSA has been as high as 16.0 now down to 10.5 as of February 15, 12. I have an appointment for another Biopsy (3rd) on Tue June 5, 2012.

I am now on Finesteride which reduces prostate size, that explains the drop in PSA values. Onco wants me to have the op as he can do nothing for me because my prostate is +70cc. That's why I have to have another Bio.

UPDATED

August 2013

Hi all 5 years diagnosed. My PSA; can be as low as 10 and 18 is the bighest so far it goes up and down all the time. The only problem I have had is on June 2011 I was seriously ill caused by an infection after a biopsy. As far as the waterworks I have no problems since starting on Finesteride no excursions during the night. The only draw back is it can make you impotent again no problem after a year on it.
