Jeff I and Julie live in Virginia, USA. He was 44 when he was diagnosed in September, 2011. His initial PSA was 6.50 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 8, and he was staged T1c. His initial treatment choice was Surgery (Robotic Laparoscopic Prostatectomy) and his current treatment choice is None. Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2015 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

One of my Grandfathers had prostate cancer but did not die of it. I went to my primary care doctor to get a routine blood test to check my cholesterol. I was told by the nurse that my PSA (5.5 )was too high for my age (44) and the doctor wanted me back in three months.

I was about to hang up when the nurse said if I were you I would see a urologist now and I did that same week.

Urologist blood test 6.5 and a normal DRE. He recommended a biopsy and a week later I had it done and the long week and a half was very painful.

I met with the doctor on a Friday morning and when he walked in he started with "we have a few things to talk about"; my wife lost it and I went blank for a few minutes.

I did a lot of reading, talked to a few guys my age that had already been down this road and met with a radiologist to look at all the options.

I had the robotic surgery December 1st and was home on the 3rd with very little pain. Still trying to get used to this catheter. I was very pleased with how it all has gone and meet with my urologist on Friday to go over the path report and I hope get this catheter removed.

Hope to have an update on Friday.

Jeff

Later: Well I visited my urologist on December 9th to get the catheter out and review the final pathology report. My Gleason Score was lowered to a 7 and all negative margins, contained to the prostate. There were a total of 12 lymph nodes taken.

I know it hasn't been a week since the catheter has been removed but still leakage and more so when I'm moving around, bending over. It does seem to be getting a little better each day.

Very soft erections, but it does work thank goodness! Both nerve bundles were saved. [Jeff might benefit from the suggestion - Use It or Lose It.]

Doctor wants me back in 3 months for a blood test, he was very pleased with the way things turned out.

UPDATED

April 2012

3 months after surgery my PSA; was undetectable which of course was great news. I still use 1 pad a day and most days I think I could do without. Lifting or some other sudden movements can spring a small leak.Still working on the ED thing, everything works just not where I want it to be. I've been given Viagra and will start those here any day.

UPDATED

June 2012

Just had my 6 month PSA; check a few weeks ago and still at "0" I feel great and see improvements all the time. ED still an issue... everything works, just not like before, Cialis once a day works good but only 6 months out so I'm trying to be patient.

UPDATED

July 2012

At 6 months post surgery I was finally able to stop using the pads. I probably could have stopped a little sooner but was still worried about the occasional mishap at work. As far as the ED, I still take 5mil of Cialis daily and that works well. My 6 month PSA; was a BIG 0, so I couldn't be happier right now. Good luck to you all and please email me if you have any questions. Jeff

UPDATED

December 2012

December 1,2012 marks one year from surgery and all is good with no regrets. PSA is undetectable to this point, I go back at the end of this month to have it checked. What a year it was and boy has it gone by fast! This site was my FIRST stop after my diagnosis and I want to thank everyone that takes the time to post here..... It does help! E-mail me direct if you have any questions! Thanks again and looking forward to a great 2013.

UPDATED

July 2013

Well, I'm at a year and a half and feeling good! I'm still reminded daily what happened 18 months ago and that's not a bad thing! Side effects pretty much gone except for the occasional leak, usually when I knew I need to go and put it off and even then no big deal. So when it comes to the bedroom it's still not 100% but it's not far off... I will say my focus must be on the moment and all is usually good! I do keep a stash of Cialis just in case. Cialis will give you FREE a 30 day trial pack with a prescription, even if you have gotten some in the past.

I have moved on but never will forget and PLEASE... Anyone with any questions email me.

This was the first site I visited when I was diagnosed and what great help it was!

UPDATED

September 2013

Just had my PSA checked at month 21 post surgery and still a proud member of the zero club. December will be 2 years since my surgery, I feel very blessed to be where I am today!

UPDATED

May 2014

I'm approaching 2.5 years post surgery and everything is great. Can't remember the last time I used Cialis, not saying everything is 100% but not too far off. I can actually get thru a day without thinking about the "C" word but very rarely two in a row..... Something always makes you remember and that's not always a bad thing.

Please, anyone just diving in to the whole just found out process, don't hesitate to email me with amy questions. Jeff
