Roy M lives in Pennsylvania, USA. He was 55 when he was diagnosed in August, 2003. His initial PSA was 6.82 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6, and he was staged T2c. His initial treatment choice was Brachytherapy (Seed Implant) and his current treatment choice is Other (Other). Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2020 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

Brachytherapy failed after 7 years. I then went on IHT. Great results for 4 years. Not sure of what was next and elected to see Dr. Charles Myers in Earlysville, VA.

Nov. 2015 - Dr. Myers put me on Lupron, Avodart, Casodex. PSA was 0.454 in June 2016 from a low of 0.328. May 25 started on Xtandi as the Lupron was failing. Also taken off the Casodex. Feel great and have more energy than I have had in years. No side effects from all the meds that I am taking. Very positive outlook on life. Enjoy semi retirement.

UPDATED

July 2016

Just received labs and my PSA dropped from 0.454 last month to 0.091. I feel well on my way to remission. Now I have no idea how long remission will last but doing good so far. Dr Myers has me on Avodart, Lupron and Xtandi. Quite a lot of medication but feeling very good. Spent Wednesday at an amusement park with 10 members of my family. They were amazed I even wanted to go. I just made reservation to go to PCRI in Sept at the LAX airport. Hope to meet some of you there.

UPDATED

October 2017

I am still on ADT3. There is no way of knowing if my PC is in remission without going off of ADT3. When/if I go off of ADT3 and my PSA goes up my doctor wants me to consider immune therapy. So I am at a crossroads. The ADT3 is very hard on my cardio vascular system so it would be good to get off of it. We are creatures of habit and my PSA is under control so it is only normal for me to want to stay on it. I am sure the answer will come to me as what to do.

UPDATED

December 2017

Basically going along fine. New doctor since Dr Snuffy Myers retired. I am seeing Dr Mark Scholz in Marina del Rey CA. I continue on ADT3 Lupron, Xtandi and Advodart. Energy level is the highest in quite a while. Just had a bone density scan this morning and the technician commented that my bones are excellent. Side effects of the ADT3 are tolerable for me. Life is good and the journey of almost 15 years continues.

UPDATED

January 2019

It was December of 2017 I had tremendous main in my left femur near the top. I went to my ortho doctor and in an x-ray we saw a 2" x 1" hole in the femur. My ortho doctor sent me to a specialist in Pittsburgh. More x-rays showed a large area of bone missing. A bone biopsy was done in May and prostate cancer was found. June 12 I had a rod from my upper femur to my knee installed to stabilize the bone. July I had 20 greys of radiation done to kill the remaining cancer. In September and October I had 3 sessions of Provenge (immune therapy) done. Now I am in physical therapy to learn to walk again.

It was a very long summer 2018. During July and August the pain was very high but it did get better. Now I can walk with a walker or cain but I still use the cain when outside to be safe. My PSA is 0.187 and other that feeling like I am in a fog I am doing very well for a 71 year old. All the inactivity has caused me to gain some weight so I am trying to get rid of that now. I have great hope for the Provenge. I was at just the right point to have that treatment and hopefully I will gain many years of enjoyable life from that. I live in Western PA but my main oncologist is in California and he has several other treatment plans for me. Whatever will give me good quality of life I am for. My deep faith has been a huge blessing and also my wife who went of all of the 42 medical appointments between April and October. We were on the go two to three times a week.

The Provenge went very well for me. I had a dual port catheter install by an excellent cardio vascular surgeon and that made the blood draw and infusion so much easier. Provenge is an amazing treatment and if you have not had it please check with your oncologist to see if you are a candidate.

Basically life is going well for me. I have no idea just how much time I have to enjoy this earth before I pass to my external home but I am enjoying the time left to it's fullest. I travel to various places 5 or 6 times a year and I do enjoy the trips.
