Les T lives in Washington D.C., USA. He was 67 when he was diagnosed in May, 2005. His initial PSA was 6.00 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was Unknown, and he was staged Unknown. His initial treatment choice was Uncommon/Unconventional (MRI-Guided Focal Laser Therapy) and his current treatment choice is None. Here is his story.

THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2014 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.

I went through the biopsy and the urologist recommended himself as the surgeon. I did not think any of the choices were very good. I ultimately found a wonderful doctor, Dr. Robert Bard (New York City), who uses a sonogram and very high tech computers to visually examine the prostate to see the extent of the cancer. I have been going every six months. It is painless and quick. This is meaningful watchful waiting. Biopsies should be discontinued, as they have been in Europe. During the past 6 years, I have been taking medications either recommended by him or prepared under his direction. For many years these meds kept my prostate cancer under control and in fact reduced the cancer. Last December when he saw that the cancer was increasing in size, he recommended the Laser guided MRI treatment which just kills the cancer and leaves the prostate intact. (This seems to be a variation of the principles used in HIFU. Details of a proposed trial are here MRI-Guided Focal Laser Therapy for Low-risk Prostate Cancer)

I had it done in January. It took about 3 hours. There was no recovery issue. When I left, I felt as good as when I entered. I understand that I am now cancer free. I continue to take his meds and see him every six months for check ups. And I had no risk of side effects from the treatment.
