THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO AN UPDATE REMINDER IN 2016 SO THERE IS NO UPDATE.
I chose surgery because I wanted something with a long track record, something that would "last" decades, and because I was persuaded by my surgeon to be one of the first patients in the area to undergo a Da Vinci prostatectomy.
At 90 days my PSA was undetectable, but at 6 months it was 0.2. My urologist was not very concerned, and didn't even check again for another 4 months, when it was 0.6. Then we were both very concerned, and he referred me to a medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist.
I had salvage radiation in the form of IMRT in the spring of 2007. Within 6 months of finishing radiation, my PSA was less than 0.1, and it has remained there.
I have some loss of sexual function from surgery, but do okay with meds. I'm 99% dry (continent) No side effects I can discern from radiation.
Just a quick update to say I'm still doing fine. My last PSA, in January 2013, was undetectable. I'm just checking it now and again with my primary care physician. We'll probably switch to an annual check, or maybe just automatically check it along with my cholesterol every 6 months. I don't have any long term side effects from salvage radiation. Prostate cancer is now pretty far down the list of my worries.
I just had my annual PSA test and the result was once again < 0.1. I'm now seven years out from salvage radiation.
Doing very well!
