BRONZE

Edward Rumick and Kathy live in Philadelphia USA. He was 60 when he was diagnosed on June 11, 2010. His initial PSA was 1.4 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 3+4=7 and he was staged T1c. He is undecided as to his choice of treatment. Here is his story.

The doctor that I go to found the increased in my PSA two summers ago when my PSA was 0.24. This past July of 2009 my PSA was 0.6 and in October at our Health Fair it was 1.2. In the beginning of December was 1.3, which the doctor said your PSA was great. After I compared my blood work for the past two years I noticed that it was slowly increasing and in March of this year I asked one of the doctors when I was getting blood work to do the PSA test again. This time it was 1.4 and this is when I told my primary doctor of the increases and he finally reviewed all the blood work.

At this time he told me to go see the urologist and after the urologist reviewed the blood work and gave me a DRE (Digital Rectal Examination), I was advised to do a biopsy of the prostrate.

I have a positive sample in 3 out of 12 samples, so bottom line don't believe your doctor when he says your PSA is fine. Keep track of your own records.

I decided to go with surgery. Had surgery on July 8 2010 - they did robotic laproscopic procedure . In at 4:00 PM, finished about 6:30 PM . The team also repaired small navel hernia. Stayed over night, was up walking down hall that night at 10:30 PM, home sitting in my recliner next day at 3:00 pm.

I just received final pathology report. There was a small amount of carcinoma on left side of prostate not detected on biopsy Gleason 6 (3+3). All lymph nodes were all clear and everything was contained in margins.

I have not had my first PSA. That is due in about a month before my 3 month check up with surgeon. I have had a little leakage problem. I had sexual contact with wife two weeks after removal of catheter which stayed connected for eleven days after surgery.

Will up date after check up and PSA

Thanks Ed

I just had my 3 month visit with my surgeon and my first PSA since surgery. I was very happy with my PSA of <0.1 which is undetectable.

I am doing much better with leakage, only using one protective pad for 24 hours. I have been going to gym five days a week working out on weight machines for about 45 minutes using weight up to 120 lbs with no leakage. I sometime leak if I cough or sneeze. If I wait too long to get up to go to bathroom I have little leaks. I think I'm doing well.

I see surgeon and PSA again in 3 months. I will up date then; hope everyone is doing well

Ed.

On Friday January 14, 2011 I went for my six month post op visit. I am doing pretty good with my PSA <0.01.

I still have some leakage but getting better. Go to gym 3 or 4 times a week with no problem with leakage. My union sent me to work for two and a half weeks first time since surgery. I had a bit of leakage while working and moving around on construction site but not as bad as I though it could be.

I will up date in 3 months after next check up.

Thanks Ed.

I am about 18 months out from surgery and feeling fine. I last seen surgeon in September with PSA undetectable.

Bladder control is very good when home relaxing, have some leakage when doing my job as construction electrician. I now am working full time on 2 yr new hospital wing in my area.

I am due for PSA and visit to see surgeon end of Febuary. I'll try to up date after visit, good luck to all, and be Brave.
