Denis
Kloske and Diane live in North Queensland, Australia. He was 65 when he was diagnosed
in October, 2009. His initial PSA was 8.1 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 8 and he
was staged T1c. His choice of treatment was Retropubic Radical Prostatectomy.
Here is his story.
My wife and I live just south of Innisfail, North Queensland,
Australia. No Kids. I'm 65 years old.
Before moving here I had regular
PSA tests for about 5 years -All around 4-5. Had a 3 year gap with no tests. I
went to my local doctor to enquire and he had one done for me in September 09.
Score was 8.0 . I was referred to a Urologist at Cairns, sent for Biopsy, MRI
and CT Scans and informed that I was in the early stages of a particularly aggressive
form of Prostate Cancer. All signs indicated that the Cancer was contained in
the Prostate. My Urologist discussed options with me.
Because I've had
Ulcerative Colitis since I was a teenager my options for treatment narrowed down
to Watchful Waiting (with aggressive cancer, who's kidding!),Hormone Treatment
(Another practical joker in my case because of time constraints!), or Radical
Prostatectomy . Where I live none of the hospitals perform Radical Prostatectomy,
so I have to have it in Brisbane, 1600 Km away.
Being diagnosed around
Christmas everything came to a halt. Since then I've had a consultation with the
surgeon in Brisbane on February 4th,2010. Consequently , I'm scheduled for surgery
in about 6 weeks. No definite date , yet.
I have been treated for
depression for the last two years and am surprised that I'm feeling quite positive
about a good outcome. I've done heaps of research (some Doctors can be a closed
mouthed lot!) My surgeon is quite up front and candid and I have confidence in
him and his associates. Two of my eight biopsies show cancer <5%, so I'm fortunate
that it has been caught early.
Will update later
Had
surgery 14th May 2010. Discomfort - yes, Pain -no. I didn't believe it could happen!
Pathology
report says cancer contained within the Prostate and has not spread Still awaiting
results for first postoperative PSA Test Happy to pass on Surgeon and Hospital
names.
Will
advise PSA reading when on hand. Surgeon to advise my GP on followup recomendations.
